The Importance of Healthy Living in the Early Years: 5 Easy Ways to Incorporate Healthy Habits into Your Child’s Routine

This January, Rosedene Nurseries is focusing on healthy living in the early years at nursery school - because we believe that a strong start to these formative years sets the tone for a happy and healthy future!

As parents, we want our kids to grow up healthy, strong, and full of energy. But the truth is, sometimes the idea of “healthy living” can feel a bit overwhelming. The good news is you don’t need to make huge changes all at once. Small, simple habits introduced during the early years can make a big difference in your child’s overall well-being – and they’re easier to work into your daily routine than you might think.

Here are five easy ways to help your child live a healthier life – and how we do it here at Rosedene Nurseries..

1. Get Moving – Every Day!

Children are full of energy, so why not put it to good use? Regular physical activity helps build strong muscles, healthy bones, and even boosts mood and brain power.

At Rosedene, we make sure every day is packed with fun ways for kids to move! Whether they’re running around outside, climbing, dancing, or playing group games, physical activity is always part of the plan. We even throw in a bit of yoga and stretching to keep things fun!

2. Make Sleep a Priority

Good sleep helps your child grow, stay healthy, and feel their best. A solid bedtime routine and enough sleep (10-12 hours, depending on their age) makes all the difference.

At Rosedene we understand how important naps are, so we create a peaceful, cozy environment for our little ones to rest. Quiet music, soft lighting, and a consistent nap schedule help them recharge so they’re ready for more play and learning.

3. Hydration is Key

We all know how important it is to drink water, but sometimes children forget! Keeping them hydrated helps with focus, energy, and mood. Try using colourful cups and fun straws to make drinking water a little more exciting!

At Rosedene, we make hydration fun and easy! Water stations are always available, and our team encourages our little ones to drink throughout the day.

4. Spend Time Outdoors and Enjoy Nature

Getting outside is one of the best things you can do for your child’s mental and physical health. Nature helps children relax, sparks their imagination, and gets them moving. Try incorporating “nature hunts” into your day. Whether you’re at the park or in your own back garden, make a game out of finding certain leaves, rocks, or even bugs. It’s a fun way to engage their curiosity while spending quality time outdoors!

We love to get our children outdoors at Rosedene! Whether it’s a nature walk, gardening, or our Forest & Beach School sessions, we make sure our little ones connect with the world around them.

5. Healthy Eating – The Yummy Way!

Food is fuel! A balanced diet with plenty of fruits, veggies, and whole foods helps kids grow strong, boosts their energy, and keeps them feeling good. Get your child involved in the kitchen! Let them help wash vegetables, stir ingredients, or even choose a fruit for their snack. When children help prepare meals, they’re more likely to try new foods and take pride in what they’re eating.

Our nursery chefs work magic in the kitchen to make healthy eating fun and delicious! From colourful fruit salads to yummy hearty dishes, we make sure our little ones get a wide variety of tasty and nutritious foods. Hear directly from our talented Rosedene Ormesby Chef, Laura:

“For those little ones with more selective tastes, a wonderful way to add nutrition to their diet is to blend fruits or vegetables. Lots of hidden vegetables can be added to mince, pasta, or curry dishes. I always add blended pineapple to my sponge cakes as it makes them soft and moist, and doesn’t affect the taste, but adds those extra nutrients! Banana is also very versatile, and you can make some simple but tasty desserts. Check out recipes or videos online and get your children involved too!”

There you go! Five super simple ways to help your child live a healthier life every day. These small changes can make a big impact, and they’re easy to fit into your family’s routine. At Rosedene Nurseries, we believe in making healthy living fun and achievable for everyone – from the youngest learners to the grown-ups!
